Thioxanthones absorb in the long wave UV at 360–420 nm and are used in pigmented formulations where the absorption of a pigment in the short and mid-range UV often screens that of the photoinitiator. The thioxanthones can pick up the 366 nm and, more importantly, the 404 nm output of a mercury lamp, providing more efficient cure for UV inks.
